Tips for Safe Storage of over-the-counter drugs, prescriptions, and recreational drugs.
Store safely
Keep drugs in a locked cabinet, drawer, or lockbox (get a free locking bag at the Lincoln County Health Department)
Store them out of sight and out of reach
Avoid leaving drugs on counters, nightstands, or in purses
Keep drugs in their original container with labels
Protect Others
Do not share prescriptions with anyone else
Keep track of how many pills you have
Store drugs away from children, teens, visitors, and pets
Be extra careful when guests are in your home
Dispose of Unused Drugs
Get rid of unused or expired drugs as soon as possible
Use local drug take-back sites or take-back days
If no take-back is available, follow FDA disposal instructions
Never flush drugs unless the label says it’s safe to do so
Be Prepared
Keep naloxone (Narcan) available if opioids are present
